Clinical Center Renovations

Following the completion of a large addition to the NIH Clinical Center, all of the public spaces in the old hospital required renovation to accommodate new clinical and research functions, and generally modernize the core of the old building. This 61,200 sf project was completed over several phases to provide circulation and public space realignment, EKG and Phlebotomy departments, a Data Center, Offices and Conferencing Facilities, a Hospital Mailroom, a Dental Clinic, and a cGMP Pharmacy with clean rooms and a manufacturing suite for production of tablets, capsules, and liquids for NDAs for use in clinical trials. New mechanical and electrical infrastructure was inserted into the building to serve these new functional spaces. The circulation path was designed to process a high volume of patients (over 115 an hour) to meet high demands, decrease wait time, and to direct patients from the waiting area to exam rooms and on to appropriate testing areas as required. Maintaining directional flow was critical to reducing cross contamination and protecting patient privacy. Impervious and durable interior finishes were provided in patient care departments for infection control and careful attention was given to phased construction efforts necessary to minimize disruption and allow NIH to provide uninterrupted patient services.
