Association of Public Health Laboratories, Silver Spring, MD
Association of Public Health Laboratories – National Headquarters
Project Synopsis
The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) was founded over 50 years ago to provide a forum for state public health laboratory directors. Today it has expanded to include governmental health labs and staff from multiple disciplines, including public health, environmental, agricultural and food safety laboratories. LSY provided space planning and design services for the initial study of expansion options for the APHL headquarters, and was then awarded a contract for design and construction administration of the project which expands APHL’s existing space to occupy the entire 7th floor (approximately 25,000 sf) at 8515 Georgia Avenue. The completed space provides open and closed offices, team rooms, a conferencing center, media and teleconferencing areas, high tech media room for the production of videos and miscellaneous support spaces. Distance learning areas feature smart boards, projection screens, and a special lighting system to control light levels during multi-media presentations. The Association continued to occupy a portion of the floor plate throughout construction. The project is seeking LEED Silver certification.
“Your design flexibility and creativity, your team’s attention to maintaining the budget and coordinating the design and construction in conjunction with our tight move schedules has made this project a success.”
