Burnette Hall

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Richmond, VA

Project Synopsis

The Burnette Hall renovation involved an existing 115,000 sf academic building originally constructed in the late 1960s. The program included approximately 13,000 sf of teaching laboratories and laboratory support spaces for which LSY served as laboratory planning and design consultant. The laboratories include: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Physics and Geology. The design featured the idea of a “window on science” which created transparency between the student body at large and the scientific teachings taking place within these spaces by designing large windows between the labs and the main circulation space. The design also increased space efficiency by integrating audio visual systems and lecture spaces with the laboratory spaces. The project was completed over four construction phases in order to keep the facility operational during the renovation.
