Campus Perimeter Security and Gatehouses

Bethesda, MD

Project Synopsis

This high-profile project was designed to meet DoD Antiterrorism/Anti-Force Protection criteria after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Perimeter Security System design incorporates several components to control access to the NIH Bethesda campus including a Perimeter Fence and West Drive Entrance Gatehouse. It also involved extensive site, landscaping and utility work, and design of a portion of the Montgomery County bike path and a new pedestrian bridge. LSY’s innovative design provides a wider pre-cast bridge to support all vehicles and traffic. The West Drive Entrance Gatehouse, the primary entry point for patients, was designed to secure NIH’s northern border while still addressing the unique requirements and sensitivities of processing patients. It consists of a Processing Building with two inbound vehicle inspection lanes and an Express Lane for extended stay patients and emergency vehicles.
