Children’s Sleep Medicine Clinic

Children’s National Medical Center, Washington, DC

Project Synopsis

The CNMC Sleep Study Clinic houses patients overnight to study their sleep patterns. Diagnostic information is gathered in these overnight sessions to assist physicians and care givers in identifying methods that will promote more restful sleep patterns and thus facilitate healing.

Because the Clinic was tight on space, the design team chose to work with built-in casework that is easily convertible for day-time clinic exams as well as nighttime patient observation. The casework design was also critical in masking obtrusive sleep evaluation equipment and creating a more “home” like environment conducive to sleep and free of hospital machines.

The design team creatively found opportunities for shared space with the adjacent Pain Medicine Clinic to maximize space utilization over the 24-hour day cycle and still maintain the compulsory privacy for each clinic. In addition to the exam and observation spaces, the final design also provides common waiting and check-in spaces, patient toilet rooms, a staff toilet room, dirty holding area, and a staff lounge.
