Islet Cell Laboratory

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC

Project Synopsis

This project involved design and construction administration for a new, approximately 850 sf, laboratory suite in the hospital’s Main building to accommodate the extraction and processing of islet cells for transplantation. The laboratory suite consists of three levels of work environment: Class 100,000, Class 10,000, and a Class 100 environment inside the biosafety cabinets. LSY developed the clean work environments to process the cells, working closely with the users to establish clear and efficient flow of product processing, personnel and equipment. Close coordination with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Project Manager was necessary to facilitate the infrastructure requirements of the project within the hospital setting. The space provides one Islet Clean Room, one Gowning and De-Gowning Room, a QA/QC Lab and Storage Room.
