Krasnow Institute Vivarium

George Mason University, Fairfax, VA

Project Synopsis

The Krasnow Institute conducts neuroscience research on the causes and potential cures for neurological diseases and disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Epilepsy. The Institute’s existing building was poorly configured and lacked sufficient stability for high resolution microscopy and the physical manipulation required for electrophysiology research. In addition, it was served by inadequate utility and MEP systems and no capability for animal model research. To address these issues, LSY’s design provided a three-story addition which was designed and constructed in two phases. The Phase 1 design included a masterplan for the entire addition with temporary exterior wall on one facade in anticipation of Phase 2. Phase 2 mirrored the Phase 1 design, doubling the area available for research and allowing the Institute to increase its number of researchers and overall capabilities, as well as increase the animal census several-fold.

“LSY has been very thorough and responsive to the difficult review processes the State of Virginia has at BCOM. They have been great to work with over the course of this entire project including Phase I, Phase I Fit Out, and then Phase II. I would recommend them to all. We have even entered into a term contract for small lab projects.”
