Children’s National Medical Center Pain Medicine Clinic, Washington, DC
Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation
Project Synopsis
Made possible by a generous gift from the Government of Abu Dhabi, the mission of the Institute is to research new treatments and innovative approaches to reduce pain in the healing of children worldwide. To establish the Institute, an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment was required to encourage cross pollination among physicians of various specialties, care givers, scientists and engineers, as well as to provide shared resources without physical barriers. From a largely windowless 20,000 sf vacant shell space with an extremely irregular geometry, the LSY fit-up design creates a modular open lab with panoramic views from each lab bench and workstation.
Fully mobile, flexible lab furnishings and ceiling fed utility disconnects are included to allow easy reconfiguration. The addition of new exterior windows allows natural light to penetrate nearly all occupied areas, and the irregular shell alcove is utilized to maximum potential through the distribution of dry lab/office nodes around the open lab. Each node includes an open workstation area, conference room, enclosed offices, and a curved feature wall with custom whiteboard and wide aisle way for informal collaboration and open meetings. Glass walls separate the offices from open areas to maximize visual connection and natural lighting.
